Choosing The Right Hair Removal Treatment

Shaving, waxing, threading and laser hair removal are just a few of the ways women and men attend to their grooming. In an increasingly busy world, it’s just another task that eats up precious time. There’s a good chance that you’ve tried at least two of these methods. Is there a better option out there for you? I’ve tried everything except electrolysis. Shaving is still an old standby, but depending on the results you want, if this is also your MO maybe you should try other options. Consider your pain threshold and just how much you hate daily maintenance when treading into new territory. What you discover might surprise you.

The Classics

Shaving, waxing and tweezing are the more traditional forms of hair removal Western folks are used to. The truth is they unequivocally work but with strings attached. If your hair is particularly course and quick to grow, you’ll be shaving (at least) once per day. Of course, waxing requires your hair to grow out at least ¼ inch before your next session. Waxing and tweezing definitely leaves a smoother surface, but it’s a never-ending battle of forcing yourself to let the hair grow back again. It can also be painful depending on the person and often involves tweezing stubborn hairs even after waxing. Keep in mind that a good waxier can decrease (though not eliminate) discomfort.

Hair Removal Around the World

Threading is the go-to method for hair removal in India. This process will remove even the finest, most difficult hairs. It works loosely like tweezing but in just one sweeping move. However, some sensitive people report that the pain is akin to waxing. This method is mostly used on smaller areas like eyebrows and upper lips. Sugaring is an alternative to wax and works very similarly. This is something you can do yourself at home and some spas also offer this treatment. While the name is sweeter, the pain and outcome is nearly the same as waxing. Just like choosing a cat repellent spray, finding the right hair removal strategy takes a little trial and error.

Permanent Solutions

Electrolysis used to be the only way to permanently remove hair, but it’s been replaced with laser hair removal. I’ve personally received great results from laser hair removal, but not without some stumbles. I’ve tried four different types of laser hair removal and only one showed results. Although I saw great improvement with IPL laser, this doesn’t mean other machines won’t work on other people. There’s no guarantee that one machine (or any) will work on your hair. However, in general people with fair skin and dark hair see the best results. It’s also, depending on the machine, much more painful than I anticipated and pretty expensive. If you think permanent hair removal is for you, don’t expect magical results and be prepared to spend at least six months (at one treatment per month) working towards your goal.
